I’m starting a serious based off of the book, Put Your Dream to the Test by John C. Maxwell.

If you have a dream that you’re wondering if you will ever reach it or see it become a reality, then you might want to consider investing in yourself and your dream and buy the book.  He also has a workbook of sorts called My Dream Map that could be useful to you.

When you think about dreams, what comes to your mind?  Dreams you had as a child?  Dreams of your career?  Nightmares that scare you? Dreams of winning the lottery?  Dreams of that perfect mate? Dreams of travelling the world?  Maybe backpacking across Europe?  How about dreams of how things would be if you were in charge?

“Dreams come a size too big so that we can grow into them” Josie Bisset

Below I’ve typed the questions John Maxwell has in his book.  The text in purple is my response.  Anything that is taken from the book is quoted and noted who wrote it.

According to John Maxwell, here are the 5 most common reasons people either can’t identify with their dream or never see it come to fruition:

1. Some people have been discouraged from dreaming by others.
Is this you?  Have you been discouraged from dreaming by someone in your life?  Someone saying something like “that’s too lofty” “that will never happen” “you will never make it”.

Let me just take a moment to encourage you by saying you can do anything you set your mind to.  You have been created with everything you need to succeed.

2. Some people are hindered by past disappointments and hurts.
Does this feel true for you?  Does this sound like something you are thinking? “I can’t achieve my dream because I’ve already tried and failed?” Or something like “I’ve already tried that and was hurt so bad I don’t want to try again because I can’t handle the pain if I got hurt again?”

If this is you, please let me encourage you.  It is a risk to try again.  It is a risk that you could be hurt again.  It is a risk to go after your dreams.  HOWEVER, what if you change your mind set to say something like, “I might get hurt again, but if I don’t try I will die unsatisfied”. Sometimes we have to get past the pain of disappointment and hurt to try again simply because if we don’t we will never be who we were created to be.  It’s all about how you think about the situation.  Forgive those who have hurt you, that’s the first step.  Dream again! Pursue with passion!

3. People get in the habit of settling for average.
Is this you? Have you settled because you think you can’t have anything better?  Or because it’s too hard to achieve greatness? How will you feel when your life passes you by and you come to the end?  Will you regret not pursuing greatness?  Or will you just think ‘eh I did ok’?

Author Kenneth Hildebrand explains it this way:
“The poorest of all men is not the one without a nickel to his name. He is the fellow without a dream… [He is like] a great ship made for a mighty ocean but trying to navigate in a millpond. he has no far port to reach, no lifting horizon, no precious cargo to carry.  His hours are absorbed in routine and petty tyrannies.  Small wonder if he gets dissatisfied, quarrelsome and ‘fed up’. One of life’s greatest tragedies is a person with a 10×12 capacity and 2×4 soul.”

Feel like you are in a rut of mundane and average? THERE IS HOPE!!! DARE TO DREAM AGAIN! You are not created for average! You are created to be a force, to make a difference, to make a change in your world.  If you are working as a cashier at Walmart (example), BE THE BEST CASHIER THERE IS! Exemplify customer service.  You will be pushed to the top! See yourself as more.  Be more! Dream more!

4. Some people lack the confidence needed to pursue their dreams.
Do you need more confidence? Not sure who to talk to? How to start?

I have great news for you!!! You are created for greatness! You are created with a passion to pursue your dreams! You are created for success! You are strong enough, brave enough, smart enough to pursue your dreams! Just ask me I will tell you!

5. Some people lack the imagination to dream
Is this you? Do you have trouble imagining the impossible? Don’t lose hope!

You have been created with the ability to imagine! If you have trouble imagining a dream, go to a park and watch children at play.  You were born with the ability to imagine, but somewhere along the way you were discouraged to use your imagination and it’s turned off.  You just need to kick start it back into gear! Children play games of imagination all the time.  Watch children at play and let your imagination be turned back on.  Sit and think about things that seem impossible to you.  Allow those thoughts to churn and watch your imagination get turned back on.  And then DREAM DREAM DREAM!
